What are my options?
What is the best treatment for me?
The best treatment for you is the one that suits your needs!
There is no one-size-fits-all treatment for a woman with symptoms. Each person experiences menopause differently and your requirements are specific to you.
We have all settled into our own habits and without realising it, some of these habits may be impacting our health.
So here is a blurb about the options and then we can talk about what suits you.
The blurb:
Treatment options include:
- Lifestyle changes
- Non-hormone treatment options
- Oral contraceptive pill (OCP)
- Body identical Menopause Hormone Therapy (MHT).
- Non-body-identicail Hormone Therapy
With the right combination of lifestyle changes hormonal or non-hormonal treatment, you can enjoy relief from your symptoms without the concern of an increased risk of breast cancer or an increased risk of DVT.
Lifestyle changes may include regular exercise, relaxation techniques, yoga, healthy eating, weight control, light cool clothing, sleep hygiene, social interaction, to name but a few.
Non-hormone treatment options is the go-to first option for patients with a history of breast cancer or other conditions where hormone therapy may be contraindicated. Antidepressants may also be considered as a non-hormone treatment option as they have been found to be effective in some women with hot flushes.
Oral Contraceptive Pill (OCP) is an option to help control your menstrual cycles as well as providing some relief from your symptoms. Of course it provides contraception at the same time. We don’t recommend its use beyond the age of 50 as it can increase the risk of DVT.
Body-identical Hormone Therapy is a safe and effective form of hormone therapy. It is plant based and the hormones have a biochemical structure identical to what the body produces naturally. These are TGA approved (Therapeutic Goods Administration). They are not considered a risk for breast cancer and if the oestrogen is used as a cream or patch, there is no risk for causing deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
Non-Body-identical Hormone Therapy is also a TGA approved treatment. However the actives are not plant based and are not biochemically identical to what the body produces naturally.
